September brought back-to-school, preparing for an especially full season and end-of-year, the Equinox and Autumn to Cologne. Included are my favorite things, including media I published & personally consumed like books read, music heard, dance, theatre, film, and series viewed, high & lowlights, holidays & special events. September Flip & Faves - Review, Reflect, Refresh - Creative Bullet Journal of a Teaching Artist
I don't need all-new supplies each season, but do find Autumn to be an excellent time to look around my life, assess my tools and materials, repair, maintain, and re-supply as needed. For me, this is mostly writing, arts & crafts supplies, and dance gear, but also vehicles and other key support structures that keep my life running in the very full days of the harvest season. You'll see stationery, writing utensils, and I also discuss my anticipated notebook/journal/planner system for the year ahead. It is "planner season" and also in quarter 4 apt to start reflecting on 2026 and considering how to resource creative practices in 2027. This is just what's working for me at this point in time and not necessarily a recommendation to others. No items have been sponsored or gifted by brands. Questions for reflection: - How do you organize your thoughts, ideas, plans, and studies? - What items nourish your creativity and productivity? - Which objects do you carry on a daily basis? - What are you making now? Thank you for watching, for being, and for dancing with me, in spirit or in fact. Take care of yourself, pay attention, keep moving mindfully, and let me know how I can be of service. Fall into Winter Creative Supplies & 2027 Planner Thoughts - Autumn Artist's Tools Audit & Re-Stock
Being a dancer and performing artist requires a basic knowledge of hand-sewing, and thus every dancer's basic kit includes a few sewing supplies. It seems everyone in my family is adept at sewing in their own way--my mother has done needlepoint and loves to make custom curtains, tablecloths and such, my father has sewn sails and reinforced book bindings, my Auntie Carol is a masterful quilter-- and I am especially inspired by my late beloved Tutu (grandma), who made young me many a costume and wardrobe item and also furnished many of the items in my kit. I too aim to be a frugal, fairly self-reliant conscious consumer, so I have the tools to mend and make simple repairs to maintain my wardrobe and household items. Here I show my most minimal sewing needs as well as more comprehensive tools for home, camp, or sailboat. - What do you mend or repair yourself? - Which supplies do you consider essential for maintaining your daily dancing or creative life? - What DIY skills do you wish to learn? - What goals are your focus this year? Thank you for watching, for being, and for dancing with me, in spirit or in fact. Take care of yourself, keep moving mindfully, and let me know how I can be of service! Ballet Dancer's Sewing Kit - Pointe Shoe Ribbons & Elastics, Costumes, Basic Mending, DIY & Home
Bringing in a new pair of pointe shoes and ballet tights to go with them recently, I've been taking stock of my artistic tools and supplies. In the process, I appreciate what has provided reliable service over the long term, what could use a little loving maintenance, and what I may wish to replace or resupply. I am struck by just how aged some of my favorites have become, long outlasting my expectations with heavy use and the passage of time. A few items would even be considered "vintage" now, having acquired them in my youth, though not yet antique! "Use it up, wear it out, make do, or do without" was the motto that helped my grandparents make it through the Great Depression, and continues to inspire my sustainable, minimalist ethic (though some areas I find easier to simplify than others), what the kids are now calling "underconsumption core." Dancers, companies, and artists have long understood the need to economize, and we have learned to romanticize this thrift that enables creative expression. Welcome behind the scenes of my dancewear and gear! None of these items have been sponsored or gifted by a brand or financially benefit me in any way, other than the value that they have provided to my dancing life long-term through reliable service. - What is your favorite dancing footwear? - Which creative tools have been with you the longest? - What are you making now? Stay tuned for more about my "Autumn Artist's Tools Audit" and other dance, creativity, and coaching goodies. Thank you for watching, for being, and for dancing with me, in spirit or in fact. August Flip & Faves - Review, Reflect, Refresh - Creative Bullet Journal of a Teaching Artist Summer
Long have I desired to get some new pointe shoes and play ballet on my toes again after many years. I've been teaching, but for that I haven't needed them, but still my dancing heart had this wish. For my birthday this year I received a gift certificate for a new pair of Gaynor Mindens (my brand of choice), so now it will be so, and we've embarked on a journey of being re-fitted, preparing physically even as young dancers in my classes make themselves ready to wear these special shoes for the first time. So I scheduled and had a virtual fitting on Zoom, ordered their recommended pair, and now they have arrived! But do they fit? - What is your favorite dancing footwear? - Have your ever wanted to go on pointe? (Or if you have done so, what was your experience?) - Which unanswered questions do you have about ballet gear or training? - What are your goals for dance this year? July Flip & Faves - Review, Reflect, Refresh - Creative Bullet Journal of a Teaching Artist
Let's be honest, Adho Mukha Svavasana, or Downward Facing Dog, has never been my favorite yoga pose. I used to really struggle with the shape and it does not come comfortably or naturally for me due to what I perceive as limitations in lower leg flexibility, stiffness in other areas, geometry, and limiting beliefs. As a yoga and dance educator I've met many others who struggle with such positions. Through work with wise teachers and engagement with texts, I've grown to appreciate the benefits of the stance and learned to explore modifications and variations of this classic yoga form that work for me. If you also are challenged to get into a happy hound, consider trying one of these options excerpted from my online Yummy Gentle Yoga class that appeals to you, and experiment with reorienting your approach and execution of Downward Dog. Taking a variety of different dogs and related asana to experience our own anatomy, develop strength and mobility, we also enjoy what I call "palette cleansers" or neutralizing and relaxing movements between each possible alternative along the way. June Flip & Faves - Review, Reflect, Refresh - Creative Bullet Journal of a Teaching Artist
It is wonderful to feel refreshed and take exquisite care of body, mind, and soul. How fortunate I feel to be able to indulge in personal care in alignment with my personal values of sustainability, voluntary simplicity, frugality, and minimalism. This is a peek way behind-the-scenes of my daily rituals, which I've crafted to be basic, minimal, and sustainable in my current lifestyle and in relation to environmental impact. Time and experimentation have been necessary to reveal what my own requirements are and what tried and true favorites would emerge. Even so, I don't feel the need to try every product on the market to determine which is the best or most optimal. Cosmetics as a category don't light my heart on fire. Challenging myself to discover what is "enough" for me does bring me contentment. This record also provides an amusing reference for my future self and perhaps of interest to other nosy/curious creatives who like to move through the world relatively lightly and well-equipped. If you have a passion for fashion, hair styling, or cosmetics, go get it! Nothing wrong with that, I've just identified for myself that other than feeling clean and cared for, professional and presentable, I do not wish to spend my creative and decision-making energies in those areas. I'm gonna be dancing, writing, filming, sketching, making music, creating, coaching. What each person requires to feel comfortable and prepared differs, but it's worth considering what our own essentials are and what we can let go of to make more room for what's most important to us. Nothing sponsored here, nor are my products a recommendation of what you should use for personal care because what is appropriate for each individual differs, that's what makes it "personal!" What are your go-to essentials that make sure personal care is handled so you can keep living an extraordinary life? May Flip & Faves - Review, Reflect, Refresh - Creative Bullet Journal of a Teaching Artist
Welcome to a behind-the-scenes tour of all the journals and notebooks in which I was working in in the first half of 2026. I rely on both analog and digital tools to organize my coaching, teaching, and creative life in an inspiring way, so I share these peeks as a way to archive and develop my projects and perhaps provide ideas for the development of your own system. I use my notebooks and fountain pens to write Morning Pages (a la Julia Cameron's _The Artist's Way_), Daily, Weekly, Monthly, & Future Logs and project Collections (a la Ryder Carroll's _The Bullet Journal Method_), to record appointments, events, to-dos, events and memories, notes, poems, stories, sketches, collages, junk journaling, photos and scrapbooking... everything! This is just what's working for me at this point in time and not necessarily a recommendation to others. No items have been sponsored or gifted by brands, but a few things were given to me as presents from loved ones. Summer Reading Nostalgic Analog TBR - Seasonal Physical Books
Welcome, crafty campers! Inspired by several creators here on YouTube and elsewhere, and the childhood sense of long lazy artsy summers I was lucky enough to have, I've decided to take a playful approach to this season's Personal Curriculum and Bucket List. Not to say I will complete all of my desired activities or complete all crafts on the list that I share, but I will be using my Bullet Journal spread as a menu of creative treats all during the warmer seasom. No camping necessary, though if you've got outdoorsy times ahead, they could provide a refreshing complement to beloved crafty activities. This online class extract is inspired by the "Canary Fairy" variation in the classical ballet "Sleeping Beauty." In part one, we learned the first portion of a simplified, smaller-space version of the this classical solo, in part 2 we practiced through to the end, and now in Part 3 I demonstrate once from behind and once from the front further refining our performances. Let's feel the frolicsome energy of a songbird in summer together, bestowing blessings on all! Hope my students have fun reviewing the material, and others get a little taste of how we dance together on Zoom from home or anywhere in the world. All steps should be taken slowly and at your (and your physician's) discretion and with appropriate modifications.
